Few places are so gentle and serene as the North Downs of Surrey, England, in early summer when the Lower Cretaceous Greensands and their resulting sandy soils give host to a profusion of wild bluebells that fill almost every space between the roots and trunks of the Alder, Ash and Beach trees.
