Image Commentary The Racetrack Valley is a roughly northeast to southwest trending valley typical of the Basin and Range province. Beyond the Racetrack, and seen in this image in the distance, are the Inyo Mountains, a more north to south mountain chain paralleling the Sierra Frontal fault system. Thus, the Inyo Mountains form the break between two huge continental terrains: the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Basin and Range of the Great Basin. |
